A Ugandan consortium comprising the Traffic Safety Awareness Organisation (TRASAO), Lobyanza Research, and Safe Transport and Survivors Support Uganda (STASSU) has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine to research motorcycle safety in Kampala. Led by Mr. Geoffrey Ndogezi, the Executive Director TRASAO, the team conducted roadside observations, interviewed 392 riders, and held focus groups to gather comprehensive data. Mr. Ndogezi will present their findings at an international road safety conference in Indianapolis , United States of America this October.
Building on this work and achievement, TRASAO is further developing a pioneering road safety knowledge competition for Kampala’s motorcycle riders, together with Bodaboda Industries Uganda (BIU), Twezimbe Women Bodaboda Riders Association (all members of ROSACU), the competition aims to identify knowledge gaps and engage policymakers through staged contests at division and national levels, culminating in an annual December conference featuring debates between top riders and policymakers. The competition will crown a “Border Safety Champion,” awarding the winner a motorcycle and prizes.
Currently, TRASAO invites more stakeholders to come on board and contribute skills, resources, and support for a launch aligned with this year’s World Day of Remembrance, aiming to strengthen road safety awareness across Uganda.
