Last month, Road Safety Club Mbarara (ROSA Club), a member of ROSACU, led an eye-testing campaign for bus drivers in Mbarara District, western Uganda. The initiative was conducted in partnership with Global Coaches Co. Ltd and sponsored by Arunga’s Eye Hospital . Mr. Thompson Sam Mwesigwa, CEO of ROSA Club, said the eye-testing exercise was aimed at promoting healthier drivers and safer travel for passengers. About 200 staff and drivers from Global Coaches were tested, and the goal was to ensure all regional drivers are examined, treated, and guided accordingly. Mr. Mwesigwa applauded Arunga’s Eye Hospital for sponsoring the exercise and urged all bus companies in Uganda to adopt similar initiatives, emphasizing that good eyesight is vital for safe driving. The event was witnessed by Mr. Sam Bambanza, the General Secretary of ROSACU.
The Law on Driver Vision in Uganda
Uganda’s Traffic and Road Safety Act, 1998 (as amended), requires drivers to undergo a medical examination before being issued or renewing a driving permit. Adequate vision is critical, as impaired eyesight increases crash risk. Drivers must be physically and mentally fit, including having proper eyesight. With over 80% of road crashes linked to human error, ROSACU and partners believe routine eyesight checks for drivers, especially public service vehicle operators, are a medical, legal, and moral obligation.
