Factors Influencing Crashes and Injuries on the Kampala-Jinja Highway: Developing Effective Mitigation Measures

  1. Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT), Kampala, Uganda
  2. Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), Kampala, Uganda
  3. Uganda Police (UP), Kampala, Uganda
  4. Road Safety Coalition Uganda (ROSACU), Kampala, Uganda

Research Overview

Road Crashes and Injuries (RoCIs) are a major global public health issue, causing approximately 1.3 million deaths annually, with the highest fatality rates in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite having only 54% of the world’s vehicles, 90% of RoCI fatalities occur in low and middle-income countries. In Uganda, road traffic injuries are a critical concern, with fatalities increasing significantly over the past 25 years. Urban areas, particularly Kampala, experience a higher volume of RoCIs, although the majority of fatalities occur in rural settings. The Kampala-Jinja Highway, a major transport corridor, has been identified as a high-risk area for RoCIs. The Ugandan government has implemented the National Road Safety Action Plan to reduce RoCIs by 25%, yet challenges persist, necessitating further research to develop effective mitigation strategies specifically for high-risk areas like the Kampala-Jinja Highway. This questionnaire is intended to obtain information to shape the above research.
