<\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe blood donation drive was organized by Twezimbe Women Boda Boda Riders as part of their International Labour Day celebrations on 1 May 2025 at Wakaliga Trading Centre in Kampala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dathive Mukeshimana, Chairperson of Twezimbe Women Boda Boda Riders, said the event was organized in partnership with Mengo Hospital, which provided medical personnel and equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The Ministry of Works and Transport provided financial support, while Honda Uganda, TVS Motorcycle Company, and Pikipiki Dada participated in the event and educated the public on road safety,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ms. Mukeshimana explained that the blood donation drive was not only a gesture of goodwill towards the community but also an opportunity to express gratitude to their customers, many of whom rely on their services to travel to and from work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Akulu Proscovia, a member of Twezimbe Women Boda Boda Riders, said the celebration was organized in honour of their customers\u2014the workers\u2014in recognition of the trust and support they have shown to women riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Our customers enjoy a safe and reliable transport experience. As women, they trust us because we are more safety-conscious, vigilant, and attentive on the road. This gives every passenger the confidence and protection they deserve,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Akulu added that female riders are generally more disciplined and comply with traffic regulations, making them less likely to receive traffic fines and penalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Challenges Faced by Women in the Boda Boda Industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Despite their growing contribution to Uganda’s transport sector, women riders continue to face several challenges, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Safety and security risks:<\/strong> Women working in the male-dominated boda boda industry are more vulnerable to robbery and physical assault, especially during night shifts, as they are often perceived as easy targets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Balancing work and family responsibilities:<\/strong> Many women riders, particularly married women and single mothers, struggle to balance their income-generating activities with domestic and caregiving responsibilities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
Support for Women Riders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Women Rising for Africa<\/strong>, a non-governmental organization that empowers women in Uganda, supports aspiring female riders, including members of Twezimbe Women Boda Boda Riders, by providing skills training and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The organization offers training in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Road sign interpretation<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Traffic rules and regulations<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- First aid and basic life-saving skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Upon completing the training, participants receive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- A motorcycle with partial cost support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- A free riding permit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Assistance with insurance processes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
This support enables women to overcome barriers, achieve financial independence, and contribute to the well-being of their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Record of Safe Riding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Since the formation of Twezimbe Women Boda Boda Riders, none of its members has been involved in a road crash or caused injury to a passenger.
