Why Road Safety Matters for Uganda

Road safety is not just a transport issue — it is a public health, development, and equity challenge.

  • Youth most at risk: Road crashes are the leading cause of death for young Ugandans aged 15–29.
  • Economic burden: Families are pushed into poverty due to medical bills, disability care, and loss of income.
  • National cost: Uganda loses an estimated 5% of GDP annually to road crashes.
  • Global goals undermined: Road crashes hinder Uganda’s progress on SDG 3 (Health), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
